Even though the building had less than 15% glazing and could have achieved regulatory compliance via the 4.2.1b Deemed-to-Satisfy route, the architect elected to employ an energy consultant to ensure the most energy-efficient compliant building was developed at the most cost-effective cost of construction.
SANS 10400XA compliance was achieved with single-glazed clear glass throughout. After extensive analysis and close collaboration with the design team we included insulated cavity wall construction, heat recovery off the refrigeration plant for the generation of hot water, we reduced the lighting consumption to just 12.4W/m2 with the use of energy efficient T5 bulbs and reduced the required flat slab car park roof insulation to 1.93m2K/W.
